ON your first driving lesson

By: Tim HillerbyMorgan

Some of your first driving lesson will be spent learning to set the car up for you to drive.

Every car and every driver is slightly different. It can get very uncomfortable, if you do not take some time to adjust the car to your needs. Your driving instructor will tell you how to do this. This article talks you through how to do this. It explains what driving schools call the cockpit drill.

The cockpit drill is also known as DSSSM. It helps you to check the doors and alter the seat ect.

Once you are sat in the drivers seat check that the doors are closed. Look in the mirrors. If the door looks shut then it probably is. The next thing to check is the driver's seat.

The driver's seat can be adjusted in three ways. It can move forward and backward. Move the seat until you can push the clutch pedal down with your left foot. You should have a slight bend in your left leg. Now adjust seat for height. Make sure that you look out of the top half of your windscreen. Finally adjust the angle of the back seat. Make sure that is comfortable and you can hold the steering wheel with your arms slightly bent.

The steering wheel of most driving school tuition cars can be adjusted. Steering wheels can be adjusted for reach and height. Your driving instructor will help you do this. Make sure that you have a comfortable grip of the steering wheel.

Now put your seat belt on. Make sure that the lap belt is on your lap and the shoulder belt is on the front of your collarbone.

Finally check your mirrors. Your mirrors should be positioned to give a you a clear view all around you. You should adjust them so that you can look in the mirrors with a slight turn of the eyes of head. The centre mirror should give you a clear view of the rear windscreen. It should show you your left ear and a little of your left eye. YOu schoold see the back corner of the car in each door mirror. The bottom of the windows should appear to be half way up the mirrors.

Once you have set the car up for your own use, your driving instructor will move on to talk about the car controls. These are the various switches and pedals that help you drive the car.

The key to being a good driver is controlling the car. You cannot control the car if you do not know how to use the switches and pedals. So, it is very important that your instructor spend part of the driving lesson on this. You can speed up the process by finding out the answers to these questions.

Steering Wheel - Where on the wheel should your hands be? What is pull push steering?

Indicators - Where are they, and when do you use them?

Wipers - How do you use them? How do you squirt the windscreen?

Clutch pedal - Which foot operates this pedal? What does the clutch pedal do?

Brake pedal - how would you press the brake to stop the car at some lights?

Parking Brake - When do you use this?

Gas pedal - Why is it called the gas pedal by driving instructors? What does it do?
