Interracial Dating: Actress from “Something New” speaks

“Something New”, the interracial romantic comedy has been on discussed on almost all interracial dating blogs The movie stars actress Sanaa Lathan as an prosperous Black woman who falls in love with her White landscaper. Compared to the movie, that is somehow Lathan's personal love life as well. The 34-year-old single Black beauty, spoke to The Associated Press about interracial dating, both on screen and in real life.

Lathan decided to take this role because it was a good script ... read it in one sitting. She said she identifies with the character and she wanted to play the role as it was a character we hadn’t actually seen on screen before - the interracial dating issue from a Black woman and White man's perspective in this kind of way. You must admit we are used to the Black man, White woman perspective when it comes to movies. And to make it even more unique, this is an interracial couple that wasn't against the world or against the family. She loved it because it was made her deal with her own prejudices that came up, her own guilt, her own shame and embarrassment about what her peers thought.

Lathan has been in several interracial relationships including guys from Latino, European and Middle Eastern backgrounds. She admitted to encountering major differences between the cultures. However, she also acknowledged that everyone is different because she has also dated Black men before and they couldn't be more different from each other.

“People are going to always have their opinions whether you date a black man or not,” she said. Her pals and family members have commented on black men she has dated as well as White people. And whenever someone doesn’t fit the bill, they would go like 'Yeah, I didn't see you with him.' “I remember after I dated this White man, nobody said anything but there was a couple of men in my family that joked after that - ’Oh yeah, we had a party when y'all broke up. Hee hee hee.” A light joke that is. But she admits it was real and they let her know. Family and friends will always react whether you date interracially or not. And, within the US culture, it's almost acceptable to be prejudiced toward Whites because of our history. “This country is loaded with racism . . .”

Like the White liberal educated guy she was dating, the family didn’t think they had a problem with interracial dating until she walked in with him. The mom didn’t want to see her son. She felt she didn’t fit the picture. And even when walking with him in Harlem and they meet like five Black dudes at a corner, she got that awful feeling of ‘you're holding his hand and you want to pull your hand away coz you don't want the judgment.’ She says Black men certainly are more comfortable with interracial dating. And she describes the feeling Black women have when they see a Black man with a White woman as an instinctual primal feeling of ‘you want her you don't want me. I don't look anything like her, so you don't like’.

In portraying Kenya McQueen, she discovered that she is definitely more open to interracial dating. And as much she has been mostly dating Black men, she now thinks she is probably more open to the idea of interracial dating. She adds that the movie “Something New” is very universal ... it’s a love story at the core. It’s about following your heart and acknowledging the fact that life may bring you something that didn't fit what you thought ... from religion to class or even a job. What people should learn from the movie is stepping outside of that comfort zone. Seeing what's there that might bring you the most happiness.
