Newcastle upon Tyne is a world well known city placed in Tyne and Wear. Newcastle obtains its name from its situation of being on the banks of the River Tyne, as well as the castle built by Robert II of Normandy, the oldest son of William the Conqueror. Before being named Newcastle, the city was a Roman settlement starting from the 2nd century, under the name Pons Aelius.

Newcastle is also known for its often well known football club Newcastle United, which just now houses stars such as England Striker Michael Owen. It was similarly the setting of the currentblockbuster film "Goal," which featured the football club, as well.

Whenever one thinks of Newcastle, one thinks of the Tyne Bridge which links Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead. It was originally designed by Mott, Hay, and Anderson who also designed the Forth Road Bridge. The bridge was then built by Dorman Long and Co. The Tyne Bridge was also featured in the movie 'Goal,' which is about Santiago Munez, an aspiring football player who tried out for the Newcastle United Football Club.

Another place of interest is definitely St. James Park, the home stadium of Newcastle United. The large stadium can fit up to 52,387 fans, making it the third largest stadium in the Premier league.

As Newcastle is famously known as the Mecca of football in its region, it is imperative that tourists visit St. James Park and soak up the atmosphere of English football. The fans sing songs and cheer for the winning team, while visiting fans from other parts of England do the same. They have what is considered a competition among fans as to who can cheer the loudest. Even if the home fans manage to win every time, the visitors don't fail to put up a fight. Rest assured, the atmosphere in the stadium is worth the relatively high ticket prices.

St. James Park provides some of the best sporting entertainment in the world. Newcastle United are a great football club, with the likes of Michael Owen and Obafemi Martins playing and the great Kevin Keegan managing the club. It is not just Newcastle that plays in St. James Park. Throughout the season, the stadium is visited by the best teams in England and even Europe such as Liverpool FC, Manchester United FC, Chelsea FC, and Arsenal FC.

The football in Newcastle is definitely something that tourists have to see. Fans are also involved, as they sing songs for their heroes. The match day experience is definitely something else, especially in the football crazy town of Newcastle. Around the city there is not one citizen that does not know the status of their beloved football club.
