Good looking people are often the most outgoing and confident. Your nose is the central feature of your face and will strongly determine your facial look. People “given” a large or crooked nose can be quite shy about it and this might result in affecting their confidence. The ideal nose is one that looks good by itself and harmonizes with other facial elements. A more common word for rhinoplasty is a ‘nose job’.

People seek rhinoplasty surgery for different reasons. One reason can be that their nose has been broken at some point in their life and not healed correctly. Others have birth defects or breathing problems and turn to rhinoplasty to help them. Breathing problems can be due to a deviated septum and a nose job can let them breathe normally again.

Now days rhinoplasty is quite a common procedure and commonly performed on both women and men. The main reason for getting a nose job is to change your appearance. If you don’t like the shape or size of your nose, rhinoplasty can help you to feel better about the way you look.

Your nose can be made smaller, thinner or straighter, depending on your what you wish for. It is a relatively simple procedure but involves a lot of expertise and experience, so find yourself a surgeon who has carried out lots of other nose jobs and can explain the procedures and risks to you.

There are two techniques surgeons’ uses for a nose job. The open technique is for more complex procedures and involves reaching the nasal bones by making incisions within the nostril and through the columella. This is the skin that separates the nostril.

Normally, for a routine nose job, the Surgeon will use the “closed technique”. In this procedure the nasal bones are reached by making incisions within the nostril. Once the cut has been made, the skin can be separated from the underlying bones and cartilages. Using this method there is no visible scar and as the surgeon can’t really see what he is doing it is important he is skilled at this work.

For both open and closed techniques, the nasal bone has to be broken in order to re-set it in its new position. At times, parts of the broken bone or cartilage are used to create the design of the nose as requested by the client. Prosthetic devices are also used in some cases along with the patient’s own cartilage to attain a preferred look.

You will be given a local or general anaesthetic depending on the type of procedure to be carried out and amount of work involved The whole procedure can take one or two hours.

After the procedure the nose and eyes will be bruised and swollen, this is painful to begin with and will take a few weeks to settle down. Gauze is used on the inside of the nose so you will not be able to breathe through your nose. The breathing will have to done with your mouth which can be uncomfortable for some. The outside bandages will have to be changed on a regularly basis and if bleeding occurs you should let your surgeon know.

It will be necessary to take at least two weeks off work, perhaps even more if possible. Sports and other physical activities are out. The pain can last for quite a while although the swelling and bruising will eventually disappear. Some people might experience side effects like a stuffy nose and a slight numbness. Just take it very easy and slow for the first couple of months and don’t do anything too physical that could cause bleeding or pain.

Rhinoplasty has been around for thousands of years and is not a new procedure at all. Early rhinoplasty rebuilt nose structures for people in India who had had their nose amputated as a form of criminal punishment. Luckily for us rhinoplasty has progressed since then. If you really want to have rhinoplasty surgery, consult your doctor today and change your life.
