The Indian IT industry has been particularly thought of as having the capabilities of going beyond its conventional domain. A major impetus to the industry can be attributed to its government. The governments, after the 1990s, have been particularly concerned about helping promote the industry to realize its optimization. Infrastructure bottlenecks have been identified. A number of constructive measures have been initiated as well such as: o Various schemes of incentives o Setting up a national task force for suggesting recommendations o More Liberalized norms for venture capitalists. o Fiscal subsidies for FDI o More recently, the formation of a committee by the IT ministry for non resident Indian professionals in the USA, for seeking active cooperation from the US government. o Steps to monitor the global developments in the field o Providing quality based education with the aim of providing superior human resource o Blueprint for consistence research and development in the sector. The growth of the industry has been, to say the least, phenomenal. Consider this: From a meager US $100 million in the 90s, the industry has recorded a surge of US $ 6 billion in 2000 alone. The yearly growth rate has been continuously well over 50 percent since the last decade. The projections from the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) report indicate the annual revenue to be more than US $ 85 billion. Major openings in the market can be seen across mainly these sectors: IT services, IT enabled services, software and e-business. Key points of the report for 2008: o over 7.5 % of the overall GDP growth of India will be due to Software and Services o FDI of U.S. $ 5 billion o Immediate Potential for 2 million more jobs o capitalization of shares should be around U.S. $ 225 billion o 35% of the total exports from India will be IT Exports India has the largest English-speaking professionals globally, after U.S. And that is indeed one of the most valuable resource it has: ready availability of technically qualified working class. Needless to say, it is this brain-power of the country that will help that will help it in further too to achieve sustained rate of economic development. Certain Limitations however continue to be the same as ever: o Poor and unkempt infrastructure o Lack of vocational training o Missing link between the corporate multinationals and the educational institutions. Yes, they are binding up, but the growth is not remarkable. o On a personal note, it is the general attitude of easy-go lucky which quite doesn’t go with what is required in a corporate scenario. The situation can be improved: o Infrastructure development at war footing and more of maintenance. o Increased flow of direct investment in the R&D in the sector o Less of political mess-up regarding the building of STPs (software technology parks) o Rigorous up gradations in the educational curricula both, at the school and university level. o National integration of all the plans regarding the industry. With such and other, deemed fit, programs the industry can be assured, if not a smooth, a satisfying journey. India has such yet untapped potential in its teeming millions that might turn any impossibility into a daring possibility! The youth around here, like anywhere else, is energetic, raring to go, and- in need of constant guidance. Proper canalization of this force is the need of the hour. Continued efforts in this direction are sure to bring steady results. In a time where this subcontinent tiger is being touted as the next hub of knowledge, resting on its laurels is the last thing that it can do.
