History

Gaslamp Quarter got its name from gas lamps which were used in early 1900 as a source of light. Originally named Stingaree, Gaslamp Quarter languished for many years before it was redeveloped. Gambling, prostitution used to be quite common here. But that didn’t last for too long.

Restoration work has given this place a complete makeover. As many as 94 Victorian style historical buildings have been restored here and brought back to previous glory. Gaslamp has over ninety buildings which are listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. These Victorian era buildings, many of which had been constructed between 1873 and 1930, are now occupied by restaurants, shops, theaters and nightclubs.

Events

If you want to participate in colorful events and experience all the excitement, then Gaslamp Quarter is the place for you. It hosts the largest Mardi Gras party featuring a Mardi Gras parade and outdoor block party.

You can also enjoy the annual Monster Bash which takes place on Halloween weekend. The highlight of this event is the costume contest and the performance of live bands. Shamrock is another event which is celebrated with Irish food and live music. When you are in San Diego, don’t forget to catch up on these events in Gaslamp.

Nightlife

Visit the Shout House where piano players sit face to face and perform classic rock n roll from the 50’s. Gaslamp Quarter also boasts of several galleries such as CJ Gallery which contains the work of contemporary Asian artists, or the Michael J. Wolf Fine Arts which houses the works from emerging national and international artists.

Shopping

Gaslamp Quarter is a delight for any shopper. The place has more than 130 stores and amazing shops selling antique jewelry, accessories, rare books, art pieces, home furnishings and lots more.

Dinning

The Gaslamp Quarter is home to some of the finest restaurants. It contains more than 80 restaurants to suit all kinds of taste buds. From delectable American cuisine, Italian and Indian gourmet to mouth-watering Persian, Chinese, Brazilian and Thai dishes, the place has got something to satisfy every palate.
