Looking back I think first learning where things where in the heavens, would have made a much better start in astronomy. The best advice is to buy a good binoculars and use that to learn where things are in the sky first before buying your first sky telescope. Binoculars, especially the ones with good optics allow you to see those objects in space and with a telescope you can then see the fine details, when you know where to look.

Your first sky telescope is always an important one - it is your gateway to astronomy, and usually your first glimpse at seeing what the beauty of the universe contains.
