Freelance Writer Jobs: Use Purpose Templates to Maximize Efficiency

By: Glen Hartman

If you are not yet using purpose driven templates for your freelance writing jobs, you should be. The benefit to freelance writer jobs is the efficiency with which you achieve your desired reader reaction. The organization and structure of your article writing becomes much easier and the impact on your reader becomes more certain. Purpose driven means imposing a high level of structure upon your writing mission.

Article writers should start with a clear definition of article purpose.

Clear definition of your writing mission is a good thing, that is, if efficiency is one of your objectives. If your article purpose is clear, then your objective, causing a reader action, will also be clear. Now, given a limited amount of article purposes in the internet arena, we should be able to construct a 2nd level breakdown of common article purposes. In fact, we can create an outline for most article purposes and, thus, create a template for each type of article purpose. For each anticipated purpose, we can derive a road map of how to get from article title to article summary. With road map in hand, we can easily see the most direct route to our goal via 2nd level outlining structure. Thereby, we can easily envision the most favorable route to reader reaction.

Use article purpose templates or outlines.

For example the purpose of this article is to inform, to educate the reader, about the importance of being purpose driven in our writing. A well written article is crafted by the author for a specific purpose. Crafting means that the end result is a judicious mixture of words, sentences, and paragraphs that convey concepts, ideas, and thoughts in such a way as to accomplish the purpose of the article.

Some common article purposes.

Here are some common article purposes and one person's view of how article purpose types may be structured. Modify these to suit your article writing purposes.

Purposes -

To inform, to educate

topic dimensions, importance to reader, topic details, summary of benefit, importance, or application

Answer a question:

question statement (example 2nd level outline decomposition), relevant considerations, discussion of facts and data, form the answer, succinct answer to the question (Expected result)

Problem Solving: define the problem, criteria for choosing best solution, discussion of alternatives, discuss solution

Warning: (avoid something),

essence of the warning, why - what's the harm, how to protect yourself, expectation of the reader

Review/Comparison: what is being reviewed, review or comparison criteria, discussion of how product or service does/does not meet criteria, recommendation

How To: statement of what is being done, when, sequence, how much, with what, logical progression of steps, options, description of results, reader benefit of doing it this way

Tips: (best way, most efficient, what to avoid) purpose of tips, benefit to reader, importance, numbered list with descriptions, summary of value to reader

Guidelines: (lessons learned, rules, laws), what's the lesson, why is it important, how it works in application, summary of learning, application, benefit

Other purpose templates: to be developed by you and customized to suit your article writing purposes

Recommendation: Develop a library of article templates to suit your article writing purposes. We have shown you some examples of purpose templates above. This is not an exhaustive list and, probably, not expressed in your terms familiar to you. But, don't miss the point, as an online writing professional, consider investing in developing your own list of article purposes and outline breakdown. As an online freelance writer, a library of article templates will become one of your professional tools.
