Fish Tanks - A Guide for Beginners

By: Horris Temple

Starting out with your first marine tank can be one of the most fun experiences you may ever have. But you must think it through thoroughly before you start. Some things that must be considered a priority to ensure your success would be tank selection. A big mistake that many rookies make is selecting the wrong size of tank before they have even thought about the type of fish they are going to put in it.

It is recommended for beginners to learn first about the fish that they plan to bring home. You need to do your research. This is because the size of the tank you should pick is relative to the size and amount of fish that you plan to put in it. Also, understanding the nature of your choice of fish will guide you on the fish tank equipment that you need to purchase or prepare. Such information will also guide you on how to go about your fish tank's maintenance.

Generally speaking you can select a saltwater or freshwater system. Remember that all wet pets will have certain requirements as far as diet, maintenance, breeding and compatibility is concerned. The fish you find at your pet outlet come from many freshwater and saltwater sources from around the world like ponds and rivers and of course the many oceans. Saltwater species tend to be less adaptive and less tolerant to changes in their environment and this is the main reason beginners should consider starting out with a freshwater system.

There are different types of aquarium setups, each offers an ideal environment for specific kinds of aquarium pets. For instance, there is the freshwater aquarium, which is great for beginners. This setup is perhaps the least expensive in terms of equipment and livestock because it caters to the meager needs of highly adaptable freshwater fishes.

The saltwater aquarium setup is usually prepared and completed with live rocks that serve as biological filters and protein skimmers and other equipment that control and monitor water chemistry and temperature to provide a stable environment for marine life.

You can see that a saltwater tank is the more expensive route, but it is considered the ultimate experience. The reason for this is because the tanks are often larger and they are better equipt to accommodate a large variety of marine life like jelly fish, coral reefs and anemones.

Fish tanks come in a variety of size, shape and materials. Glass and acrylic tanks are available in sizes that hold 10, 20, 29, 30, 40, 50, 55 or more gallons of water. Aside from the rectangular shaped tank, they are also available in hexagons and shapes with bowed fronts. Acrylic tanks are made lighter, stronger and more durable than glass tanks. However, acrylic is prone to scratches and more difficult to buff. For beginners, it is generally advised to invest on a large tank because it tends to have more stable water parameters. It better limits sharp temperature fluctuations, which assure more stable environment for your fish.

On a final note if you do decide to get a larger tank or any fish tank for that matter you should also be thinking about a stand for it. Don't cheap out here as your stand needs to be able to support the full weight of a filled tank plus accessories. Lastly remember to keep your marine tank away from direct sunlight to prevent rapid temperature changes as well as unwanted algal growth.

If you've been thinking about taking the jump into the hobby of fish tanks for your home or office. Be it saltwater or freshwater tanks there some important things that you must know and some basic steps that need to be taken to ensure a healthy balanced environment for your pets is achieved.
