There are countless ways to find great deals on craigslist. First, you must understand the market for the merchandise you are trying to purchase to understand whether it is a good deal or not. You must also know where on the website to search for the items and when and when not to begin negotiating. One who keeps their eyes open and is knowledgeable about the items in question can find great deals on craigslist.

The "free area" on craigslist is a great place to start. If you're searching for old furniture or other freebies to turn one man's trash into your treasure, this is the place to look. You will need to check this section everyday, as the free items tend to go very quickly. Search through all the posts until you come to those that were posted several weeks prior. It is then you will know that you have seen the most recent listings. In most of the older ads you see, the items have already been given away and the owner neglected to delete the ad. Don't even waste your time on listings over 3 weeks old unless it is an item that you want badly. With a little luck, the item will still be available.

After you have looked through the free area, start searching through the appropriate categories for the item that you are in search for. Make sure to go through each category methodically. If you don't find any great deals today don't get discouraged. There will be more options tomorrow. Whatever you do, don't get caught up in the "I have to have it now" mentality. You will miss your good deal if you do this.

If in your search you find an item of interest, contact the owner by the email listed on the ad. Make sure to let them know you are very interested and ask for more information on the item. If there is no picture in the ad, ask to see the item. Ask for any information not already specified in the ad. This assures the owner that you are a serious buyer. Now, you can attempt to bargain. Sometimes you can and sometimes you can't. Remember not to be too pushy with your negotiations. The sale greatly depends on your ability to communicate with the buyer. With nothing but an email address, this is your only link to the buyer and he or she can ignore your emails at their discretion.

Sale of stolen goods on craigslist is strictly prohibited. Ask the seller if they are the owner. Now, this practice will only "keep the honest people honest." Although, sometimes crooks are not very smart! If they say that they are not indeed the owner, don't buy it. Don't fall for stories like, "my dad wants me to sell his 1968 Camaro SS for $500." In fact, a 1968 Camaro SS with NO MOTOR could sell for thousands!

I cannot stress to you the importance of knowing your market. The more knowledge you have of your category, the less chance you have of getting ripped off. If at all possible, avoid dealing with sellers a great distance from your home. Some scams include telling you to "send check or money order and I will take care of the shipping." You might be saying, "nobody would do that!" You would be surprised what happens to starstruck buyers who after months of searching, find what they have always wanted, and make stupid decisions to try to get it.

Don't ever get so desperate that you can't walk away from a purchase. If at any time you don't feel that this purchase is the right thing to do, get out of it! Go with your gut instincts and the majority of the time, you won't get ripped off. If you don't feel like you can make that decision, ask a friend or relative with an unbiased opinion. If they get an unsure feeling, STAY AWAY! Remember, you are looking for the best deal possible and unless the item is exceptionally rare, you will be able to find it again and buy from someone else. You will always get a better deal when dealing with reputable people. A good seller will never pressure you into buying their item.
