Can You Really Lose Weight With Hoodia?

A free article on Supplements

By: Travis Van Slooten

Before we answer the question can you lose weight with hoodia, let's take a step back and get a better understanding of what hoodia is and how it works. As I mentioned, hoodia is an appetite suppressant. The hoodia gordonii plant contains a molecule called P57. This molecule essentially tricks the brain into thinking you are full even though you haven't eaten anything.

It works by mimicking blood sugar (glucose). After you eat, your food is broken down into blood sugar. That is why there is an increase in blood sugar levels after you eat something. The hypothalamus, the part of the brain responsible for signaling hunger or feelings of fullness, detects this increase in blood sugar levels and then signals to your brain that you are full. Without the hypothalamus, you would never feel full after eating.

P57 is estimated to be 10,000 times more effective than blood sugar at signaling the hypothalamus. In other words, it takes very little of P57 to trick your brain into thinking you are full because it is so much more "potent" than natural blood sugar. It is P57 that is responsible for hoodia's appetite suppressant abilities.

As I'm sure you can see, it is very likely that you can potentially lose weight with hoodia by taking it prior to eating. Your brain will be fooled, thinking you are satisfied sooner, enabling you to consume smaller meal portions. However, that's all it will do – is make you feel full.

Hoodia gordonii is not a fat burner or some kind of magic weight loss supplement, even though it is often characterized that way. Hoodia is not a stimulant so it does not affect metabolism in any way. You can't just pop some hoodia diet pills and expect the excess weight to disappear. Since all it does is suppress appetite it is still up to you to watch what you eat and exercise to get your metabolism revved up to burn more calories.

Furthermore, you will not be able to lose weight with hoodia if you are an emotional eater or are unable to control the kinds and amounts of food that you eat. Emotional eaters turn to food for comfort. They don't have a problem with hunger or portion control so hoodia supplements will do very little for them. And if you do take hoodia supplements and you are able to control your portions because of it but your portions still consist of McDonald's hamburgers and fries, it's going to be tough to lose weight with hoodia!

Another thing to keep in mind is that hoodia doesn't always work. Some people don't respond to it. However, for most dieters it will work as long as you take an authentic hoodia gordonii supplement and as long as you take enough. Sadly, the majority of the hoodia diet pills on the market today are fake. It's no wonder why so many people claim they don't work! Another problem is when people decide to try hoodia supplements they don't take enough of them or stick with them long enough.

I consult with a doctor who has over three years of clinical experience with hoodia. He has monitored over 500 men and women who have tried to lose weight with hoodia. In his experience, his patients need anywhere from 2,250-4,000mg of hoodia per day for it to work effectively! Furthermore, he says that hoodia's effects usually aren't immediate. It can take as long as two weeks before it starts to work.

Can you lose weight with hoodia? Yes, you can but its role is limited and don't expect dramatic results from just hoodia diet pills alone. However, when combined with a sensible diet and regular exercise, hoodia can give you that extra edge to help you reach your weight loss goals.
