A Consistent Exercise Plan

A free article on Exercise

By: George Hull

There are literally thousands of exercise plans out there.  Virtually all of them are capable of helping you lose weight, stay in shape, or tone up.  With that in mind, how should one choose an exercise plan since there are so many to choose from?
The answer is to simply choose an exercise plan that you can stick with.  Consistency is the key.  If you can find an exercise plan that you enjoy, and that you are willing to do on a consistent basis, then the rest will take care of itself.
Let's take an example of an exercise plan that requires a cardio workout for 30 minutes, three times per week.  If you enjoy this version of working out, you will certainly see a dramatic weight loss over the coming months, and a tremendous improvement in your overall health and well being.  Why?  Because you enjoy the exercise regime (that is hopefully combined with a healthy diet), and you are sticking to it consistently.
Let's take another example of an exercise that will probably increase the speed in which you will lose weight and generate a healthier body, yet you have a very difficult time on sticking with it.  An example would be a weight lifting regimen that requires you to lift weights for two hours per day, six days per week.  If you are able to consistently perform this regimen, combined with a healthy diet, you would likely achieve your weight loss and muscle tone goals at least twice as quickly than with the previous plan.  The trouble with this one though is that most people will not consistently perform this exercise.  They may start out with the greatest of intentions, and actually make it work for a few weeks, but eventually they will quit.  When they quit, most people will end up in worse shape than what they started with.
A necessary factor in any exercise plan is that you enjoy it, and that it is reasonable so that you can continue with it for years.  If you enjoy the workout, you will want to keep it up.  If you don't, it is far more likely that you will not last with it.  Likewise, most of us require a plan that is reasonable so that we will likely continue with it for the long term.  An exercise plan that requires too much time, and too much commitment, is extremely difficult to continue.  Finding an exercise plan that doesn't take up too much of our precious time, and doesn't require a zealous devotion on a daily basis, will make it that much easier to stick to.
As with many things in life, finding the right balance of reasonableness and consistency is the key in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  You could very easily commit yourself to a diet fad that will help you lose 20 pounds in a month, but how will it help you when you end up quitting it?  It won't.  Unless you are able to consistently apply yourself to a reasonable exercise and diet plan, you will never achieve a healthy lifestyle for the long term.  Your health, and many other aspects of your life, will go up and down like a rollercoaster.
There may be better exercise plans out there, but simply sticking to any reasonable plan will place you on the road to a healthy success.  Consistency is what is required.  Don't think about quick results and gains.  Remember that you are seeking a body that will perform at its best over the long term.  The only way to do that is to constantly perform a diet and exercise plan that you are comfortable with.
Now go out there and find an exercise plan that you enjoy, and stick to it!
